In the Spring of 2015, the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) conducted a pilot Community Food Assessment of a neighborhood in the East Knoxville Community. Two of the main objectives of this pilot study were to look at the food environment in a holistic way and create a methodology on how to conduct future food assessments in Knoxville. The pilot study looked at physical and economic access to healthy foods as well as asking community members about their perceived barriers to healthy foods. KCHD will be sharing some of the information learned during this process at the next Food Policy Council meeting on April 21st from 8:30-9:30am in the Community Room at the Knox County Health Department located on 140 Dameron Ave. Knoxville, TN 37917. In addition, Dr. Betsy Anderson Steeves with the University of Tennessee Nutrition Department will be discussing her past and future research.
